A Report Shows That AI and Robots Have Dominated the Internet

Currently, robots have gradually taken over the dominant position on the internet, and traffic generated by artificial intelligence and robots has officially surpassed that of human users.

On March 26, cybersecurity company Human Security released its "State of Artificial Intelligence Traffic Report," which clearly states that artificial intelligence and robots have officially surpassed human users, becoming one of the main sources of internet traffic.

"The entire creation of the internet is based on a very basic idea that there is a person on the other side of the computer screen, and this idea is rapidly being replaced," Human Security CEO Stu Solomon told the media.

According to Human Security's definition, automated traffic refers to "internet traffic generated by software systems (including artificial intelligence) rather than human users." In recent years, automated traffic has experienced rapid growth as people increasingly rely on AI chatbots to resolve everyday questions.

The report shows that by 2025, automated traffic on the internet will grow at nearly eight times the rate of human activity, and the gap will continue to widen.

Furthermore, the report points out that the widespread adoption of large language models such as OpenAI's ChatGPT, Anthropic's Claude, and Google's Gemini has played a significant role in driving the surge in AI traffic, which saw a 187% increase from January to December 2025 alone.

Solomon stated, "Machine traffic is effectively replacing humans as the dominant form of traffic on the other end of the internet."

Human Security's report is based on data collected by its "Human Defense Platform" product, which reportedly processes over ten quadrillion interactions from its customers. However, due to the lack of a comprehensive global database of internet interactions, accurately quantifying automated activity across the entire internet remains a significant challenge.

“You can try to estimate bot traffic by looking at proxy strings, but those estimates are very noisy,” Filippo Menzel, professor of informatics and computer science at Indiana University, told the media.

“It depends on the sample you get. It depends on where you get the data from, where the measurement data comes from,” Menzel added.

User proxy strings are self-identifying tags for web crawlers and are currently one of the common methods used in the industry to estimate bot traffic.

Human's report also acknowledges that while the company uses user proxy strings to identify AI operators, “the reliability of this self-identification is increasingly worrying,” further increasing the difficulty of quantifying automated traffic.

The report also mentions that AI agents like OpenClaw, capable of autonomously performing various operations for users, have led to an explosive growth in their activity. Data shows that while the activity of such AI agents was extremely low in 2024, by 2025, Human Security had detected a nearly 8000% increase in related traffic.

It's worth noting that not all automated traffic is malicious; it includes common and useful services such as AI overviews and autofill features from popular platforms like Google.

Solomon emphasizes, "The idea that machines are evil and humans are good is simply unrealistic. We must live in a world where machines act on our behalf, and therefore we must build a trust that can be sustained in the long term."

While the Human Safety Report's coverage is not comprehensive, it has become an important benchmark reflecting the state of internet traffic in the current era of rapid AI development, providing crucial reference for industry research.

In fact, since the official launch of ChatGPT in 2022, the industry has been closely monitoring the steady growth of automated traffic, and its impact on the internet ecosystem is gradually becoming apparent.

At the SXSW conference in Austin, Cloudflare CEO Matthew Prince stated that before the advent of generative AI, approximately 20% of internet traffic was bot traffic, primarily driven by Google's web crawlers.

Prince predicts that by 2027, traffic generated by AI robots will surpass human traffic across the board. He points out that behind this trend is "the rise of generative AI and its endless demand for data."
